WINTER EYEWEAR TRENDS 2023
BOLD AND EXPRESSIVE , CAT EYES TO BUG-EYED.
SPECTACLE WORLD HAS IT ALL
With us moving away from languid summer days, there is one thing we can look forward to. This winter’s eyewear trends are expressive and daring, with eye-catching silhouettes. Whether you’re stopping for your morning latte, dressed up to go out on the town or hiking through the mountains, one of the simplest ways to update your look is with a new pair of eyewear.
According to Adele Camarena, owner and director at Spectacle World, harmony and balance are the most important criteria when selecting a frame. “Eyewear is a very personal accessory and not a one-size-fits-all. Under the guidance of an eyewear stylist, you can select the perfect frame and shade from this season’s colours to complement your face shape, personality, eye, and hair colour, as well as skin undertone.”
This winter, cat eye frames are still making waves in fun, flirty and modern styles. Available in a wide range of designs, colours, and materials, these frames are characterised by an upsweep at the outer edges of the top of the frame. “Cat eyes are one of the few shapes to elevate and accentuate cheekbone structure, while sharpening soft facial features and rounded jawlines. These specs can be worn by most face shapes, as long as the size of the frame, colour and arms are in balance and suit your proportions,” Camarena explain
Swarovski Cat Eye:
Jackie O popularised oversized glasses in the ‘60s and this trend is back in full force. Perfect for hiding behind or adding movie star glamour to your look, this style will make you feel confident and on trend. According to Camarena, these frames usually suit those with a more prominent bone structure. “They make a statement and are ideal for the more dramatic personality type. They’re also wider, which means a small, narrow face will become lost and disappear.”
Oversized Sunglasses:
Oval frames are a great option between smaller and oversized frames, and once you’ve tried them on, you’ll fall in love with them. With designers embracing this trending shape, you can’t go wrong. Although almost everyone can wear oval frames, it complements square, round, triangular and heart-shaped faces best. “The trick is to select frames that are the same width or slightly broader than the broadest area of your face. It also balances solid facial characteristics and slanted cheekbones,” she says.
Oval frames:
Thin metal frames have made a comeback, but this time they’re aimed at a younger demographic who may not know the functional styles from yesteryear. Oversized metal frames, particularly in exciting metallic hues, can create a sleek, minimalist look. Metal frames are a great choice for those who enjoy light-weight specs.
Thin metal:
Not to be ignored, are the massive, bug-eyed, specs that closely resemble oversized frames from the ‘70s. “These glasses are for those with a love for the dramatic and retro. They are a fashion statement with the boldness of modern invention and most suited to smaller faces,” she adds.
Bug-Eye:
Looking hip whilst exercising has never been easier. With so many styles to choose from, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running when it comes to sports and outdoor living. She comments that technical sports options are not where this trend ends. “Fashion frames with a sporty edge are as big a trend. You’ll see models on the catwalks and celebrities sporting these styles everywhere. With a myriad of choices available, you’ll find the ultimate shape for you.”
Cool and playful colour-tinted lenses are a big hit this season. An excellent way to experiment with colour, this style is effortlessly chic and a trend you should keep an eye out for. Reflective sunglasses are also huge and offer a distinctly futuristic – a must-have for people who love edgy street style.
Camerena reckons if you haven’t fallen for coloured lenses, opting for colourful frames are also an excellent choice. “Ranging from bright to soft colours, these are available in various design to enchant us all. One of our stylists will assist you in selecting the perfect colour to match your features. With technology integration, some eyewear even boasts SMART features like blue tooth. You can listen to music or your google maps while wearing them. We’ve also noticed a trend towards eco-friendly frames, where designers use materials like wood, bamboo and recycled plastic. Our locally manufactured David Green eyewear use biodegradable acetate while keeping up with the latest trends and pantone colours.”
Camarena concludes that eyewear has become a fashion statement, offering on-trend, fashion-forward frames. Designers continue to captivate us with unique shapes, colours, and features to help us display our sense of individuality. Eyewear is the easiest way to update your wardrobe. Plus, wearing sunglasses in winter helps reduce glare, eye strain, temporary and permanent impaired vision, and many other easily avoidable issues,” Camarena concludes.
Camarena and her team are qualified eyewear consultants, having completed courses presented by the Eyewear Styling Academy.
